Mission archéologique française en Alaska

French archaeological mission in Alaska

The French archaeological mission in Alaska (mafAK) was created in 2013. Its main focus has been the early prehistory of Central Alaska and the archaeology of Beringia. Yan Axel GÓMEZ COUTOULY has been directing the French archaeological mission in Alaska since its creation in 2013.

The mission is supported by French agencies, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Ministère des Affaires étrangères, MEAE), the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) and the French Polar Institute (IPEV).

It also draws on close cooperation with several North American universities and institutions, such as the University of Alaska Museum of the North (UAMN), the Center for the Study of the First Americans (CSFA) of Texas A&M University, Adelphi University (New York), Cornell University (New York) and the Denali Borough (Alaska).
